Northern Ireland v Poland Live

Nigel Worthington’s men had a dreadful start to their Group 3 campaign, picking up only one point from their first three games. They lost to Slovakia, then drew with the Czech Republic and lost to Poland in their third game. However back to back victories over lowly San Marino have currently given them second spot in the Group on goal difference.

Northern Ireland will be missing the services of Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty and Burnley forward Martin Paterson as both are injured. The absence of both Lafferty and Paterson means that youngster Glen Little has got a call up to the squad. Grant McCann is Northern Ireland’s top scorer in the qualifiers so far, with two goals to his name.

Leo Beenhakker’s Poland, favourites to win this group along with the Czechs, are currently fourth in the table. They started off well with a draw against Slovenia and wins over Northern Ireland and the Czech Republic but were beaten 2-1 by Slovakia in their last game. Ebi Smolarek’s goal had seen the Poles take a 1-0 lead in Bratislava, but Stanislav Sestak struck twice late in the game to give Slovakia a shock win.

Beenhakker also has a few injury problems. Lech midfielder Rafal Murawski injured his toe against Arka Gdynia and will miss both of Poland’s qualifiers. Beenhakker will probably have to choose between Tomasz Bandrowski and Lukasz Tralka in midfield then. Upfront Ireneusz Jelen should start as the Auxerre hitman has been in good form recently.
