A hard fought 3-2 victory over Poland on Saturday saw Northern Ireland move to the top of their group table rekindling hopes of qualifying to their first World Cup finals in 24 years. Warren Feeney opened the scoring in the 10th minute but Poland equalized through Ireneusz Jelen.
Jonny Evans restored Northern Ireland's lead two minutes into the second half. The game was all but over in the 61st minute when the hosts doubled their lead thanks to an own goal by Michal Zewlakow whose back pass bounced off a rut and over keeper Artur Boruc's attempted clearance to give Ireland a 3-1 lead. Though Marek Saganowski reduced the deficit late in injury time, Northern Ireland hung on to claim vital three points from the game.
They take on a Slovenia side that hung on to their slender chance of making it to the play-offs with a hard fought 0-0 draw against Czech Republic on Saturday. Matjaz Kek's side had the better of the chances in the first half but were unable to take advantage of their dominance as Czech improved in the second half to come away with a point from the game.
The draw meant that any of the five teams could still qualify out of the group though Northern Ireland could take a giant step towards making it at least to the play offs if they manage to collect all three points from their match on Wednesday.
