Diego Maradona’s tenure as Argentina supremo looks ever increasingly fragile as his team go from one bad result unto another. The defeat to Brazil on Saturday evening was a bitter pill to swallow for all involved with Argentinean football, and they are now in very serious danger of missing the boat to South Africa in 2010.
The Brazilian result has meant that the qualifying table has really bunched up in terms of the fourth qualifying spot, which is the last automatic qualifying position. With Brazil (30 points), and Chile and Paraguay (27 points each) looking like they have done enough to qualify with four games remaining, Argentina in fourth with 22 points, followed by Columbia and Ecuador on 20 points, and Uruguay and Venezuela both on 18 points, all have something to fight for.
A defeat for Argentina on Thursday evening could see both Ecuador and Columbia overtake them in the table should results go their way, and hence Maradona’s job looks certain to be doomed. No matter how much he is revered in his homeland, non-qualification for the World Cup finals will be even too much for the great man himself to hold onto his job.
Paraguay for their part look home and dry in terms of qualification. A win against Argentina will see them only need one point from their remaining three fixtures to secure qualification. On Saturday they beat Bolivia at home by 1-0.
