Whereas Portugal actually started off their Group 1 campaign as favourites, Bosnia’s inclusion in the play-offs is a major surprise. Their attempts at qualifying out of Group 5 were doomed when they were pitted against the Spanish, but the fact that they managed to finish above the likes of Turkey and Belgium is testament to the great football they did manage to play throughout qualifying.

Portugal’s World Cup dreams were in the balance right until the very end of qualifying in Group 1. Ultimately though, they did limp into second place behind winners Denmark who won the group with 21 points. Portugal managed to amass nineteen points and pipped Sweden who finished on eighteen.

The Portuguese have to go into both legs against Bosnia without arguably their best player. Cristiano Ronaldo has been injured for the last few weeks from a knock he sustained with his club side Real Madrid. He will miss both legs of the tie which will be a huge blow for the Portugal side.

Bosnia finished second in their group behind runaway group winners Spain, who achieved a perfect ten wins from ten games to finish on 30 points. Bosnia eventually finished up on nineteen points, four ahead of third placed team Turkey.
