Russia start off the game against the Slovenians as hot favourites to come through both games and make it through to the World Cup finals which take place in South Africa next summer. With a great record under boss Guus Hiddink, the Russians only narrowly missed automatic qualification themselves, with a damaging home defeat to Germany in the last week of qualification ending their ambitions.

Nevertheless, the team has come on in leaps and bounds since the Dutchman took charge, and despite him taking charge of Chelsea in the English Premier League on a part time basis for the second half of last season, this didn’t appear to effect Russia’s international aspirations.

The team obviously finished second in their group, Group 4, and eventually finished four points behind the Germans, with 22 points. These came from seven wins, one draw and two defeats, with the only home defeat coming in that vital second last game of qualifying against Germany in Moscow.

For their part, Slovenia surprised many people when they nicked the play-off spot in Group Three. They did this by finishing above pre-qualifying favourites the Czech Republic and only two points behind eventual group winners Slovakia. Their total of an impressive twenty points was accumulated from six wins, two draws and just two defeats- one away to the Czech Republic and the other, more surprisingly, away to Northern Ireland.
