Russia and their manager Guus Hiddink will be kicking themselves going into the second leg of their World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on Wednesday in Maribor. Leading 2-0 in the first leg in Moscow on Saturday, they were cruising to a comfortable victory while at the same time Slovenia looked dead and buried. But the tie was turned on its head when the Slovenians managed to score a vital away goal two minutes from time, giving themselves every hope of qualifying for the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer. See how they get on this Wednesday evening by joining us here at oleolefootball.watchlive.net and enjoying the live stream football at its very best.
When the two teams faced off in Moscow on Saturday, few people actually gave the Slovenians a chance of progressing to the finals next summer, but the final result will give them every chance of overturning the result and causing an upset. Indeed, the way things have panned out in the match, it is Russian boss Hiddink who will be the more worried of the two coaches. From going from a position of comfort and dominance, to one of uncertainty and anxiousness with just a couple of minutes left in the match is the overriding feelings Hiddink will be having now.
The Russians scored either side of half time through Dinyar Bilyaletdinov to set up a comfortable lead and to lay the foundations for their journey to South Africa next summer. But as mentioned above, the Slovenians had other ideas. The game itself was an exciting affair with the two teams battling it out and creating many chances, and indeed, Russia could have scored again after going 2-0 up to really put the tie to bed.
It wasn’t to be though and Nejc Pecnik pooped up just before full time with the crucial away goal. Watch the Slovenia vs. Russia game right here at oleolefootball.watchlive.net this coming Wednesday.
