Turkey face Estonia on Saturday evening for Group 5 of 2010 World Cup qualifying. Both teams are unable to qualify automatically as Spain are virtually assured of first spot. The best Turkey can hope for in their remaining four games is to catch Bosnia in second place, therefore securing a play-off berth. Estonia are right out of the equation now and all they have left to play for is pride. Turkey have had a rather indifferent qualifying campaign thus far. Their record of two wins, two draws and two defeats from their six games does not read particularly well with the team management, especially as it was not too long ago that they were mixing it with the world elite (at both World Cup and European Championship level). With eight points to their name, and sitting in third position, they are currently four points behind second placed Bosnia, and a full ten points behind runaway leaders Spain.
Turkey’s last game was a 2-1 home defeat to Spain back in April of this year, and that despite going in at half time with a 1-0 lead. In fact, the game before that was also against the Spaniards, this time in Spain and the Turks lost that one as well by 1-0.
For their part, Estonia are really just making up the numbers in the group and are currently fifth with five points. These points were accrued from one win (home to bottom placed Armenia), two draws and three defeats. Their last match was indeed that home victory over Armenia.
