The Ukraine and Greece play their second leg of the World Cup qualifiers this coming Wednesday in Donetsk after a goalless draw in the first game at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Saturday evening. No matter how hard both teams tried in the match on Saturday evening, both were unable to ultimately find the net and the encounter finished in a 0-0 stalemate. As everybody is aware, a 0-0 result really doesn’t offer either team an advantage going into the Donetsk game and so, for all intents and purposes, Wednesday’s match becomes a straight knock out contest. Obviously, any score draw will see the Greeks through, so this may be deemed as a slight advantage for the Greece team.
The Greek boss, Otto Rehhagel, will feel quietly confident that his team still have a chance in the Donetsk game and knows that if his side manage to score a goal then the onus will very definitely be on the Ukrainians side. The Ukrainian boss will himself be very aware of this fact and will warn his defenders to do all they can to stop the Greeks from scoring.
They game in Athens on Saturday evening didn’t give the fans in the Olympic Stadium much to cheer about. Chances were few and far between and any goal mouth action was at a premium all evening. Obviously the two teams did have a couple of chances to score during the contest, most notably when Liverpool defender Sotiris Kyriakos headed wide in the dying seconds.
