The United States were not expected by most pundits to beat Honduras away from home, but they managed to win 3-2 on Saturday and thus booked an automatic spot at the 2010 World Cup. Julio de Leon put Honduras ahead with a well taken free kick, but the USA equalised eight minutes into the second half through Conor Casey.

Oguchi Onweyu’s long ball was headed by Charlie Davies into the path of Casey, and the Colorado Rapids striker showed his strength as he outmuscled Valladares and headed in the equaliser. Landon Donovan created Casey’s second goal. Maynor Figueroa was unable to stop Donovan’s pass and Casey kept his cool in a one on one situation with Valladares. Donovan himself scored the third, and although Honduras managed to pull one back, they couldn’t score again.

Costa Rica picked up their fourth home win in qualifying as they beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 at home. It was a dream start for coach Rene Simoes, who was appointed as manager of Los Ticos after three straight losses cost Rodrigo Kenton his job.

Alvaro Saborio was the architect of Costa Rica’s triumph, scoring twice in the game. Veteran Walter Centeno also found the back of the net. Trinidad and Tobago also scored an own goal as Costa Rica kept themselves in the hunt for an automatic qualifying spot.

It has been two months since the US Men's National Team has seen any action, and they begin the batch of summer matches this Wednesday when Costa Rico hosts the final round qualification for the World Cup.   The U.S. Is currently sitting on top with 7 points, and Costa Rica just behind them with one point. This will be the fourth round, with Costa Rico undefeated against the U.S. The United States has suffered from some injuries to key players and this may affect the match this week.

Coach Bob Bradley is expected to start with Spector Onyewu, Bocanegra, Beasley, Dempsey, Bradley, Donovan and Mastroeni just to name a few projected start-ups and Costa Rico will probably bring out Segare3s, Corrases-Umana, Fernandez, Diaz, Borges, Centeno, Hernandez and Alonso. America just finished tying with El Salvador and are looking to win in Saprissa. The U.S. are on the right track and a win or draw would only put them further on the road to South Africa. Even a loss would only be a temporary setback with this much momentum built up.
