Wales v Finland Live
Wales face Finland this Saturday in a Group 4 World Cup qualifier in Cardiff that could go a long way in determining their chances of making it to next year’s quadrennial extravaganza in South Africa. Wales started their campaign well with wins over Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein, but losses to Russia and Germany have dealt their chances of qualifying a huge blow. Wales are currently third in Group 4. They are tied on points with Russia, but Guus Hiddink’s men have a better goal difference.
Peterborough central defender Craig Morgan will miss both of Wales’ qualifying games as he has not recovered from his toe injury. West Ham’s James Collins is also fighting against the clock to be fit along with national captain Craig Bellamy. Jack Collison also misses these qualifiers after injuring himself on club duty with the Hammers. A lot will depend on the Welsh youngsters- Aaron Ramsey, Chris Gunter, Sam Vokes and Gareth Bale, as well as senior pros like Bellamy and Robert Earnshaw.
Finland were beaten 3-0 by Russia last year in October, a game in which they scored not one but two own goals. Finland currently have four points from three games, having drawn with Germany and beaten Azerbaijan in their other two qualifiers.
Finland coach Stuart Baxter will be without three key players- Tottenham’s Teemu Tainio, Heerenveen midfielder Mika Vayrynen and Werder Bremen’s Petri Pasanen. FC Saturn playmaker Alexei Eremenko Jnr has been called up to the squad after being ignored for the first three games. Finland will be captained by former Ajax and Liverpool star Jari Litmanen.
