Greece failed to take points from their opening fixture against South Korea, a match in which they were soundly beaten by the Asian outfit. They were soundly criticised by newspapers back home for their tardy performance and coach Otto Rehhagel would have cracked the whip on his players.
Playmaker Giorgios Karagounis struggled against South Korea ‘s pace and was substituted at half time by Rehhagel. It now remains to be seen whether the veteran will play against the Nigerians. The Greek defending was also shoddy and they could have an even worse time in Bloemfontein should Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback start with the pacy duo of Osaze Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins.
Both Odemwingie and Martins were substitutes in Nigeria’s opening game against Argentina as Lagerback chose to start with Chinedu Obasi and Victor Obinna in attack alongside Yakubu. While Obasi did give Argentine right back Jonas Gutierrez some anxious moments, Obinna was largely anonymous and could lose his spot against the Greeks. Odemwingie’s pace could prove to be a great asset for the Super Eagles against the Greeks, who found it hard to cope with the slick nature of Korea’s game. Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama was in stunning form against Argentina and single handedly prevented Lionel Messi from scoring on several occasions. The misfiring Greek forwards will have a hard time getting past Enyeama.
Liverpool Sotiris Kyrgiakos could return to the starting XI after being benched against the Koreans. Nigeria and Greece met at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. The Super Eagles won 2-0 that day in Massachusetts. Finidi George netted the opener, while Daniel Amokachi scored the second late in the game. A loss for either team could effectively mean the end of their World Cup dreams.
