Algeria beat fierce North African rivals Egypt in a tense playoff to reach the World Cup. They also performed reasonably well at the recently concluded 2010 African Cup of Nations. The Desert Warriors recovered from a shock loss to Malawi in their group opener to beat Mali and draw with Angola. The four points they collected was enough for a spot in the quarter final, where they upset pre tournament favourites Ivory Coast. However Egypt proved to be too strong for them in the last four. The Pharaohs thrashed Algeria 4-0 to take revenge for the playoff defeat and end the latter’s hopes of African glory.

This is Algeria’s third appearance at the World Cup. Their two previous appearances came in 1982 and 1986, but neither performance was anything to crow about. The Desert Warriors played two warm up games prior to the World Cup- they were defeated 3-0 by Ireland in one, and managed to defeat United Arab Emirates 1-0 in the other.

Slovenia were also surprise qualifiers as they managed to make it to the World Cup at the expense of fancied Russia. They have won both their pre World Cup friendlies comfortably. Qatar were thrashed 4-1 while Oceania outfit New Zealand were comfortable beaten 3-1. Milivoje Novakovic and Andraz Kirm scored in both games for the Slovenians. The side is captained by midfielder Robert Koren, of Lillestrom and West Brom fame.

Slovenia striker Zlatan Ljubijankic is expected to recover from his ankle injury in time for this fixture. Algeria will be without the services of influential playmaker Mourad Meghni, while other stars like Rafik Halliche, Madjid Bougherra, Antar Yahia, Hassan Yebda, Nadir Belhadj and Carl Medjani are all carrying minor niggles. Coach Rabah Saadane will be hoping that most of his key players will be able to take the pitch on Sunday.
