Argentina came into the tournament on the back of a poor South American qualifying campaign but the Albicelestes had no problem in topping Group B at the World Cup. They won all three of their group fixtures, scored seven goals and let in just one. Coach Diego Maradona opted to start with three strikers in all of Argentina’s games and is expected to field a similar formation against the Mexicans.

Argentina beat Greece 2-0 in their last game. Both the goals came in the second half- one from defender Martin Demichelis and the other from veteran forward Martin Palermo. Maradona chose to start with Sergio Aguero and Diego Milito alongside Messi against the Greeks but is likely to revert to his preferred trio of Messi, hat trick hero Gonzalo Higuain and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez against Mexico.

Mexico had one draw, one defeat and a win in Group A at this World Cup. The win came against France, the draw against hosts South Africa in the tournament opener, while the loss was against group leaders Uruguay. Both Mexico and South Africa finished on the same number of points, but El Tri advanced to the knockout stages thanks to their superior goal difference.

Efrain Juarez is likely to return to the Mexican XI after missing the Uruguayan game through suspension. That means that Andres Guardado will again have to make do with a role on the bench. The Mexicans lost to Argentina 2-1 in extra time at the last World Cup. Two of the three goal scorers that night- Mexico’s Rafael Marquez and Argentina’s Maxi Rodriguez will be present in Johannesburg this weekend. Arsenal’s Carlos Vela is fighting against the clock to be fit for this fixture.
