Despite only just qualifying for the World Cup, Argentina are considered by many to be serious challengers for the title. Their coach, the legendary Diego Maradona, led the Albicelestes to their last major triumph in 1986 and he will be keen to repeat the feat as a manager in South Africa.

Maradona has taken some bizarre decisions as manager. He opted not to select the Inter Milan duo of Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti for the tournament despite both players having fine seasons for the Nerazzurri. In qualifying, Maradona ended up trying out close to ninety players and nearly paid for it as Argentina came mighty close to not making the World Cup.

Maradona has no shortage of attacking options and it remains to be seen whether he decides to play to his strengths by adopting a three pronged forward line. He has traditionally stuck to two upfront but playing three will allow him the luxury of fielding Carlos Tevez alongside La Liga stars Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi, both of whom together plundered over sixty goals for their respective clubs in Spain last year. And waiting in the reserves, he has the prolific Diego Milito, one of the architects of Inter’s historical treble last season.

Nigeria were in the same group as Argentina at the 2002 World Cup and both teams failed to progress beyond Round 1 on that occasion. However Lars Lagerback, the man who lead Sweden to the second round in 2002 at the expense of Argentina and Nigeria, is now coaching the Super Eagles. Nigeria beat North Korea 3-1 in their last friendly, while Argentina’s last fixture saw them thrash Canada 5-0 in Buenos Aires. Lagerback has already identified his starting XI against the Argentines, but will be without the services of influential midfielder John Obi Mikel, who had to pull out of the World Cup due to an untimely injury.
