Serbia put the memories of their 1-0 loss to Ghana in the tournament opener behind them as they stunned Germany 1-0 in their last game. Liverpool bound midfielder Milan Jovanovic scored the only goal of the game. Germany had a great chance to equalise from the spot after Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic had handled the ball in his own box, but Vladimir Stojkovic saved Lukas Podolski’s spot kick to give the Serbs a famous win.

Against Germany, Serbian coach Radomir Antic made three changes to the side that had lost to Ghana. Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Milos Ninkovic and Neven Subotic came in for Nenad Milijas, Marko Pantelic and the suspended Alexsandar Lukovic. All four of Serbia’s defenders- Kolarov, Vidic, Subotic and Ivanovic went into referee Alberto Mallenco’s book against the Germans. Serbia currently have the same number of points as Germany, but are third in the group on goal difference.

Australia overcame the early dismissal of Harry Kewell against Ghana as they held on for a 1-1 draw in Rustenburg. Brett Holman gave the Socceroos the lead in the 11th minute, but Asamoah Gyan equalised from the spot for Ghana in the 25th minute. Despite being a man down, the Socceroos carried on valiantly, and could have even nicked all three points late in the fixture.

The Aussies need to win against Serbia on Wednesday and need to win by a really big margin. A draw will certainly not suffice and their strikers need to make merry in Nelspruit on Wednesday. Australia’s heavy opening loss to Germany has left the Socceroos with a goal difference of minus four.
