Brazil won the Group of Death fairly comfortably. They beat North Korea 2-1 in their opening fixture and followed it up with a 3-1 victory over Ivory Coast that sealed their progress to the next stage. Their last fixture against Portugal in Durban ended in a scrappy 0-0 draw with seven players going into referee Benito Archundia’s books.

Brazilian playmaker Kaka will return to the first XI after sitting out the Portugal fixture through suspension. Robinho was rested for the Portugal game as a precautionary measure but is expected to take his place on the left wing for the game against Chile. The same goes for midfielder Elano, but Juventus star Felipe Melo is a doubt after twisting his ankle against Portugal.

Chile were the surprise package of Group H and very nearly relegated European champions Spain to second spot in the group. Wins over Honduras and Switzerland gave La Roja six points, with Spain just managing to finish above them on goal difference.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa will be without his first choice central defensive pairing of Guy Medel and Waldo Ponce as the duo are suspended. Also missing will be defensive midfielder Marco Estrada, who was sent off in the first half against Spain. Chile have an embarrassingly poor record against Brazil in recent fixtures. In the eight matches played between the two teams in the past decade, Brazil have won seven, with one game ending in a 1-1 draw. Chile have only managed to score four times in those eight games, and lost both their fixtures to Brazil in South American qualifying. In comparison to Chile’s four goals, the Brazilians have scored a whopping 27 times in those eight games.
