The Brazilians lifted the Confederations Cup in South Africa last year and are one of the favourites for the title this year. Despite being drawn along with Ivory Coast and Portugal, many people expect Dunga’s men to top Group G with ease. On paper, North Korea represent Brazil’s easiest opponents at this World Cup and the Samba Kings are expected to make light work of the Asian side.
Brazil played two friendlies earlier this month- both against African opposition. They beat Zimbabwe 3-0 in one and thrashed Tanzania 5-1 in the other. The Brazilians are on a five match winning streak that stretches back to November last year. Coach Dunga has given the cold shoulder to Ronaldinho and is expected to persist with his preferred batch of players. Dunga is expected to play a 4-2-3-1, with Sevilla’s Luis Fabiano playing as the sole central striker and Elano, Kaka and Robinho supporting him from behind. Rampaging right back Maicon is another great asset to the Brazilian defence, which will be marshalled by experienced skipper Lucio.
North Korea are the lowest ranked team at this year’s World Cup. Their last appearance at the tournament came in 1966, where they had a fairytale run to the quarterfinals before the genius of Portuguese great Eusebio saw them fall at the last eight hurdle. North Korea have lost three and drawn two of their last five international fixtures. The draws were against South Africa and Greece, both of whom are competing at the 2010 World Cup.
North Korea’s most recognisable player is Jong Tae-Se, who plays in the Japanese J-League. Fellow forward and captain Hong Yong-Jo plies his trade for Russian outfit Rostov and the two will shoulder much of North Korea’s attacking burden. With the exception of Jong, Hong and veteran midfielder Ahn-Young Hak, the entire team plays in North Korea.
