The Indomitable Lions were expected to beat Japan in their group opener but succumbed to a surprise defeat against the Samurai Blue. Coach Paul Le Guen opted for a lineup that took fans and pundits alike by surprise. Samuel Eto’o, arguably the team’s best striker, was played out of position on the right wing. Le Guen also opted for the ageing Hamidou Souleymanou in place of Carlos Kameni in goal. He also left Arsenal’s Alexandre Song on the bench, opting to play Eyong Enoh, Jean Makoun and young Joel Matip in midfield.

The victory was Japan’s first away from Japanese soil. Cameroon coach Le Guen blasted his players for their attitude, while goalkeeper Hamidou said that losing to Japan was akin to throwing away the joker from a pack of cards. It remains to be seen whether Le Guen continues with the attacking 4-3-3 against the well organised Danes, or chooses a more conservative lineup.

Denmark could count themselves a tad unfortunate to lose to Holland in their group opener. An own goal from Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and a late strike from his club mate Dirk Kuyt condemned the Danes to a 2-0 loss on Monday. Danish coach Morten Olsen had to start with the unfit Nicklas Bendtner upfront after Daniel Jensen and skipper Jon Dahl-Tomasson failed to recover from their respective injuries. Bendtner, already struggling fot fitness, was a peripheral figure in the game and did not really trouble Mathijsen and Heitinga.

It is unclear whether Tomasson and Bendtner will be fully fit to take the field against Cameroon. The players will also find it hard to acclimatise to the high altitude playing fields of Johannesburg. The Danes will be hoping that Agger, Kjaer and co. can keep Eto’o quiet and that their forwards can conjure a goal out of somewhere. Cameroon’s record against European opposition at the World Cup will also lend encouragement to the Danes- the Indomitable Lions have won only once in eleven outings.
