The Indomitable Lions became the first team to be knocked out of the World Cup after losing 2-1 to Denmark at the Lotus Versfeld Stadium. After the opening loss to Japan, coach Paul Le Guen restored Alexandre Song to midfield and played skipper Samuel Eto’o in a more central role. The move paid off as the Indomitable Lions took the lead. Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen’s horror pass found Pierre Webo, who in turn found Samuel Eto’o, who made no mistake inside the box.

Danish defender Simon Kjaer set up Denmark’s response. His long pass found Dennis Rommedahl, who slid the ball across for Nicklas Bendtner to slot in. Rommedahl then turned scorer in the second half as the Danes completed a superb comeback win. Cameroon did have their chances towards the end of the game, but some poor finishing from the Indomitable Lions and some excellent keeping from Danish stopper Thomas Sorensen kept the tie at 2-1.

Holland booked their spot in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Japan. Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal of the game as the Dutch kept up their 100% record in Group E. Despite already being assured of a spot in the next round, Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk is unlikely to tinker too much with the side that won the first two games.

Arjen Robben has missed both of Holland’s initial fixtures and is also a doubt for the Cameroon clash. Van Marwijk has said that he will allow Robben to decide whether he is fit enough to play or not. The coach has also said that Robin Van Persie will return to his best in an Oranje shirt soon. Van Persie has not quite been able to replicate his club form for the national side at this World Cup.
