The Spanish recovered from a shocking first game loss to Switzerland to beat Central American minnows Honduras 2-0 in their last game. Barcelona striker David Villa showed his class on 17 minutes by cutting in from the left and firing past Honduran keeper Valladares. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres missed two gilt edged opportunities before Villa sealed victory with his second of the game in the 51st minute. Villa could have had a hat trick on the hour mark after Navas had been brought down in the area, but he missed his spot kick.
Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque fielded two strikers from the start against Honduras instead of the solitary one he had employed against the Swiss. Andres Iniesta’s injury forced Del Bosque to start him on the bench, while David Silva made way for Jesus Navas in the starting XI.
Chile broke down a resilient Swiss defence 1-0 to take a massive step towards the round of 16. Former Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez, born and brought up in South Africa, netted the only goal of the game for Marcelo Bielsa’s men after the Swiss had set a new world record for the most number of World Cup minutes without conceding.
Chile have six points from two games and a goal difference of plus two, while Spain have three points and a goal difference of plus one. Should the Spanish win in Pretoria on Friday, they are guaranteed a spot in the last sixteen as their goal difference will become better than Chile’s. The other spot in Group H will then become a tossup between Chile and Switzerland, who take on Honduras in their last group fixture. This will be Chile and Spain’s first meeting at the World Cup since 1950.
