Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in Nelspruit thanks to Jean Beausejour’s 34th minute strike. The goal, created by Mauricio Isla was a somewhat fortuitous one, but there was no doubting the fact that Marcelo Bielsa’s side deserved their lead. In the absence of main striker Humberto Suazo, Bielsa played both Matias Fernandez and Jorge Valdivia, with the latter operating just behind the front pair of Sanchez and Beausejour.
Valdivia limped out of the Honduras game in the dying stage and will not take part against the Swiss, according to his wife. However Chilean officials will be hoping that the playmaker recovers from his thigh injury to take the field against Ottmar Hitzfeld’s men. Suazo, Chile’s top scorer in qualifying, missed the game against Honduras but should be available against the Swiss.
Switzerland caused the upset of the tournament when they stunned reigning European champions Spain 1-0 in their opener. It was probably the greatest evening in Swiss football history and they had goalkeeper Diego Benaglio and their defence to thank for it. Stephan Lichsteiner and co. kept their composure despite star defender Philippe Senderos having to leave the field on 36 minutes due to an ankle injury. Spain had plenty of the ball and were a constant threat in the final third of the pitch but the Swiss firmly held fort and refused to surrender.
Manchester City reject Gelson Fernandes scored the only goal of the game shortly after the interval as Spain failed to clear the danger from Diego Benaglio’s long ball. The Swiss are in a better position than the Chileans going into this game. Because Spain are expected to beat Honduras, a victory for the Swiss over Chile will see them book a spot in the knockout rounds of the competition.
