A goalkeeping error from Robert Green cost England dearly as they could only draw with the United States last weekend. Green fumbled a Clint Dempsey shot to give the Americans an equaliser after Emile Heskey had combined with captain Steven Gerrard to give England an early lead.

Gerrard was the easily the best England player on show in Rustenburg. Wayne Rooney did not have too much of an impact, and will be hoping for a better outing on Friday. Fabio Capello’s selection policies backfired against the United States- James Milner and Ledley King had to be substituted early because of injuries while Rob Green did not exactly justify his selection under the sticks ahead of David James and Joe Hart.

Capello is likely to have Gareth Barry back in midfield for the Algeria game and is likely to either revert to a 4-4-2 with Gerrard on the left wing, or a 4-2-3-1 with Gerrard in the centre and Rooney as the sole striker. Another headache for the England gaffer is in defence, where Ledley King has been ruled out of the Algeria fixture. Capello is likely to pair experienced Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher alongside John Terry despite reservations regarding the former’s lack of pace. Matthew Upson and Michael Dawson are the other options to partner Terry in defence.

Algeria will be without the suspended Abdelkader Ghezzal after the striker got himself sent off within fifteen minutes of coming on the pitch against Slovenia. Goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi is expected to retain the No.1 jersey despite his mistake against the Slovenians that allowed Robert Koren to net the winner. Algeria need to win this fixture- defeat in Cape Town would all but mean an exit from the World Cup. Coach Rabah Saadane is likely to mostly stick with the side that lost to Slovenia and will only make the odd change or two.
