France failed to impress in a goalless draw against Uruguay in their tournament opener. Coach Raymond Domenech left in form Chelsea winger Florent Malouda and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry on the bench and opted to start with Arsenal’s Abou Diaby. Despite enjoying large amounts of possession, Les Bleus were unable to make the most of it and had to settle for a disappointing draw. Yoann Gourcuff was anonymous, Sidney Govou missed an easy chance to put France ahead, and Nicolas Anelka cut a sorry figure upfront as France were unable to find a way past Oscar Tabarez’s side.
France need a win in this fixture because a loss or a draw would put them in the unenviable situation of having to beat hosts South Africa in the final round of matches. Given the strong home support for Bafana Bafana and France’s own patchy form, coach Raymond Domenech will be keen to avoid that situation at all costs.
Mexico played well in the first half against South Africa, but were forced onto the backfoot by the hosts in the second half. Siphiwe Tshabalala scored from a brilliant counter attack that caught Mexico napping and Teko Modise wasted a glorious chance to double South Africa’s lead. El Tri equalised through Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, who was playing in a more central role against Bafana. South Africa wasted another late chance through Katlego Mphela and Mexico managed to hold on for a precious point.
The front trio of Giovani dos Santos, Carlos Vela and Guillermo Franco had little luck in front of goal. Aguirre employed Marquez and Efrain Juarez in midfield alongside skipper Gerardo Torrado, thereby relegating Andres Guardado to the bench. Guardado was the creator of Mexico’s equaliser against South Africa. Mexico will also be keen to go forward and this will give France more breathing space in the final third of the pitch.
