The Germans recovered from their 1-0 loss to Serbia to beat Ghana in their final group game. A stunning second half strike from rising Werder Bremen star Mesut Ozil proved to be the difference between the two teams at the final whistle. Germany topped the group with six points, while Ghana, who were leading Group D going into the final round of games, were forced to settle for second place.

Germany will welcome back striker Miroslav Klose after a one game suspension. Klose was sent off against Serbia and was ineligible for the fixture against Ghana. Klose’s replacement against the Black Stars, Brazilian born Cacau, is likely to drop to the bench against England.

England just about managed to make it to the knockout stages after beating Slovenia 1-0. It was by no means the best English performance in recent times, but it was certainly a marked improvement over their lacklustre displays against the United States and Algeria. Striker Jermain Defoe, starting in place of Emile Heskey, netted the only goal of the game in the first half when he volleyed home James Milner’s cross. England coach Fabio Capello also gave Joe Cole his first appearance at this World Cup by introducing him as a substitute for Wayne Rooney against Slovenia. However England were pipped to top spot in Group C by the United States, who finished first as a result of having scored more goals than England. Defender Jamie Carragher returns from suspension for England.

The two teams most recently met in November 2008, when goals from Matthew Upson and John Terry gave England a 2-1 win over Die Mannschaft. The Three Lions have faced off against Germany four times in previous World Cups. England won one, one ended in a draw, while Germany progressed on the other two occasions.
