The Serbians have their backs to the well following a 1-0 defeat to Ghana in their group opener. Despite being a man down, the Serbs seemed good value for a point until substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic handled the ball in the area, thereby prompting Argentine referee Hector Baldassi to point to the spot.

Serbian keeper Vladimir Stojkovic was unable to guess right and Asamoah Gyan duly converted the resultant penalty for Ghana. Serbia will be without defender Aleksandar Ludovic following the latter’s dismissal against Ghana. The White Eagles will have to rethink their tactics against Germany- a loss to Die Mannschaft would mean an early flight home should Ghana also manage to gain atleast a point against Australia.

Germany were slick in their demolition of Australia in their opener. The 4-0 margin of victory is the highest by any side so far in the tournament and such was the Germans’ superiority that they could easily have pumped in a few more. Coach Joachim Low started with a 4-2-3-1 as expected by many, but sprung a surprise by fielding young Bayern forward Thomas Muller on the right wing instead of Piotr Trochowski. The move paid rich dividends as Muller scored one of Germany’s goals in the second half.

All four of Germany’s strikers found the back of the net against Australia. Lukas Podolski was the first, followed by veteran Miroslav Klose. As mentioned above, Muller scored the first goal of the second half for Germany and substitute Cacau rounded off a great night with his 70th minute effort. Cacau’s goal came seconds after he had replaced Klose. Germany are expected to play the same XI against Serbia with vice captain Bastian Schweinsteiger the only doubt with a slight cold.
