The Germans demolished Diego Maradona’s Argentina 4-0 in the quarterfinals, inflicting upon the Albicelestes their heaviest World Cup defeat in thirty six years. Argentina’s defence had come under close scrutiny prior to their World Cup campaign and many had picked it out as the side’s weakest point. The Germans proved those fears to be true as they exposed gaping holes in the Argentine backline. Upfront Lionel Messi cut a frustrated figure as Germany’s midfield duo of Khedira and Schweinsteiger did not allow the ball to come to him.

First, Thomas Muller took advantage of some poor defending and goalkeeping to head Schweinsteiger’s free kick past Argentine keeper Sergio Romero. Miroslav Klose made it 2-0 midway through the second half, and seven minutes later, Bayern midfielder Schweinsteiger cut through the Argentine defence like a knife through cheese to set up defender Arne Freidrich for goal number three. Veteran Klose added a fourth late in the game as Germany produced another high class performance after their 4-1 win over England.

Spain were again saved by David Villa as they edged out Paraguay 1-0 in their quarterfinal. La Furia Roja were nowhere near their best, but got the result they required thanks to Villa’s late goal. The Barcelona striker fired home after substitute Pedro’s first time effort had cannoned back off the post. Villa currently leads the goal scoring charts with five goals to his name.

Spain have no players suspended but Germany will be missing young Thomas Muller, who has been a real revelation in South Africa. Piotr Trochowski is expected to take Muller’s place on the right wing against Spain. Other possible replacement options for Muller are Marko Marin and Toni Kroos. German striker Miroslav Klose, who earned his 100th cap against Argentina, is one goal short of equaling Ronaldo’s World Cup record of fifteen goals.
