Under the guidance of Milovan Rajevac, Ghana took a huge step towards progressing from Group D when they beat the Serbians 1-0 last weekend. Striker Asamoah Gyan scored the only goal of the game from the spot after Serbian substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic had been penalised for handball in the area. Gyan kept his cool from 12 yards out and sent opposition keeper Vladimir Stojkovic the wrong way.
The victory was even sweeter given that the Black Stars were without the experienced duo of Stephen Appiah and Sulley Ali Muntari in midfield. Against Serbia, Rajevac played Anthony Annan and Kevin Prince Boateng in the centre with Andre Ayew and Prince Tagoe attacking from the wings. Inter’s Muntari is likely to be restored to the starting lineup against Australia.
Pim Verbeek’s Australia have a lot to do following their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Germany. The Socceroos were outclassed and thoroughly dismantled by the Germans, who could have made the margin of victory even more embarrassing had they taken all the chances that came their way. Australia conceded two goals in either half as Germany strolled to a 4-0 win.
Even worse for Australia, star midfielder Tim Cahill was sent off for a challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger and will miss the Ghana game. Three other Australian players- defenders Lucas Neill and Craig Moore, and midfielder Carl Valeri were yellow carded against Germany. Australia have a good record against Ghana in past encounters. In the six games between the two sides, the Socceroos have won four, and they beat the Black Stars 2-0 in the last meeting a decade and a half ago.
