Ghana failed to capitalise on the dismissal of Australian forward Harry Kewell as they drew 1-1 with the Socceroos in their last game. An error from Ghana keeper Richard Kingson allowed Australia to take the lead via Brett Holman, but Black Stars striker Gyan Asamoah, for the second game running, scored from the spot to bring Ghana back into the game.

The inexperience of several of Ghana’s players showed against the Socceroos. Instead of making forays into the Australian box, the Ghana players tried to win the game by hitting long range efforts. When they did go forward, some of their players tried to go for individual glory instead of passing to a teammate in a better position. Ghana still lead Group D with four points from two games and will qualify for the next round if they avoid defeat against the Germans. This game will see Kevin Prince Boateng, the man who ended Michael Ballack’s World Cup even before it ended, in action against the Germans for the first time.

Germany were hailed as title favourites after their thrashing of Australia, but succumbed 1-0 to a determined Serbian outfit in their next game. The dismissal of Miroslav Klose for a seemingly innocuous foul was a key point in the game. Germany also earned a penalty in the game that was squandered by Lukas Podolski. Klose is suspended for the game against Ghana and is likely to be replaced by either Cacau or Mario Gomez on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

For Germany, Mesut Ozil was their star of the day as he worked tirelessly to create several opportunities for Joachim Low’s side. However the young Werder Bremen star eventually ran out of gas and Serbia held on to keep their World Cup dream alive.
