Greece breathed new life into their World Cup campaign by beating Nigeria 2-1 on Thursday. The win was aided by a moment of madness from Nigerian midfielder Sani Kaita, who received his marching orders for aiming a kick at Vasilis Torosidis when the Super Eagles were comfortably in control of the game. Greece made their one man advantage count when Dimitrios Salpingidis nabbed the equaliser just before half time. The Jabulani ball then made its presence felt when the ever so reliable Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama spilt a shot from Tziolis, thereby allowing Torosidis to give Greece their maiden World Cup win.

Prior to the Nigeria game, Greece had never won a World Cup game and had never even scored in a WC fixture. At USA’94, they were crushed 4-0 by Argentina, whose current manager Diego Maradona scored a goal in that fixture. Gabriel Batistuta scored a hat trick for Argentina that day as they made light work of the Greeks.

Argentina have won both their group fixtures and are almost assured of qualification thanks to their superior difference. The only way Diego Maradona’s men could go out of this World Cup is for them to lose to Greece and Korea to beat Nigeria by a huge margin. In such a scenario, it would come down to goal difference between the three teams.

Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain grabbed a hat trick against Korea and is leading the list of goal scorers at the World Cup. Team mate Lionel Messi had great outings against both Nigeria and Greece but has failed to find the back of the net so far. Veteran medio Juan Sebastian Veron could return to the side after missing the Korea fixture through injury. Right back Jonas Guiterrez is suspended, while captain Javier Mascherano and defender Gabriel Heinze are a yellow card away from missing a game.
