Honduras are making their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup since 1982. Los Catrachos drew with Spain and Northern Ireland on that occasion but a loss to Yugoslavia put paid to their dreams of qualifying for the next round. They picked up the third automatic qualifying spot from the CONCACAF zone for the 2010 World Cup, thus relegating Costa Rica to the intercontinental playoffs.

Honduras’ last five results have not exactly been encouraging. Los Catrachos lost to Turkey, Venezuela and Romania, and could only draw against Belarus and Azerbaijan. Their strike force only managed to score in the Belarus game and drew blanks in the other four fixtures. Honduras are sweating on the fitness of midfielder Wilson Palacios and former Inter hit man David Suazo, but are expected not to rush the duo into action if they are not fully fit.

Honduras are probably the easiest opponents for Chile in Group H. That is precisely why Bayer Leverkusen defender Arturo Vidal has described this game as one his team cannot lose at any cost. Chile have their own injury problems- star forward Humberto Suazo is a doubt and coach Marcelo Bielsa may have to play Colo Colo’s Esteban Paredes in his place on Wednesday. Other possible options upfront for Bielsa are Jean Beausejour and Fabian Orellana.

Chile are on a three game winning run, having beaten Zambia, Northern Ireland and Israel in their pre World Cup friendlies. Alexis Sanchez scored three goals in those three fixture and will be a key player for coach Marcelo Bielsa in his three pronged attacking formation. La Roja scored the second highest number of goals in qualification, just one behind leaders Brazil. Chile also tied with Paraguay for the highest number of wins in CONMEBOL qualifying.
