Ivory Coast are coached by Swedish manager Sven Goran Eriksson, who lead England to two consecutive quarterfinal appearances in 2002 and 2006. The African giants qualified for the World Cup the first time in 2006, but were unlucky to be drawn in a group that included Argentina and Holland. They played well but identical 2-1 losses to the Albicelestes and Oranje ensured that their win over Serbia and Montenegro would prove to be little more than consolation.
Skipper Didier Drogba is seen as a very important player in Sven’s plans, and the whole nation is currently sweating on his fitness. Drogba injured himself in a collision with Japanese defender Tulio in a recent international friendly and is a serious doubt for his side’s Group G opener in Port Elizabeth. Drogba is a natural leader and is easily his country’s most influential player, meaning that his absence on the pitch could benefit Portugal greatly. There is only one member in the Ivory Coast 23 member squad who plies his trade in Ivory Coast-goalkeeper Daniel Yeboah who plays for ASEC.
Portugal have not been very impressive in the lead up to the tournament and many pundits are doubtful whether this side can replicate their semifinal finish at the 2006 World Cup. In skipper Cristiano Ronaldo, they have one of the world’s best players, but he failed to trouble the scorers even once in European qualifying for the Seleccao. However Ronaldo was in excellent form for Real Madrid last season and Portuguese fans will be hoping that he has saved his best for the big occasion- the World Cup. Manchester United’s Nani will miss this tournament as a result of injury.
Portugal were last seen in action against Mozambique in the BIDVest Goodwill Cup. Carlos Queiroz’s men ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace from substitute Hugo Almeida. Danny Alves netted the game’s opening goal shortly before the hour mark.
