The Japanese lost to Serbia, South Korea, England and Ivory Coast and could only manage a goalless stalemate against lowly Zimbabwe in their five pre World Cup friendlies. Even worse, they scored only once in these outings- and that too through defender Tulio against England. The results prompted under fire coach Takeshi Okada to play Keisuke Honda as a centre forward against Zimbabwe, a move that did not achieve the desired result.

Japan bossed possession against Zimbabwe but simply could not make it count. The shyness of the Japanese strikers in front of goal could come to haunt them badly against Cameroon, a nation that looks better than the Blue Samurai on paper. Plus Japan will also have to contend with the height of the Cameroon players and the physical nature of their game- teams in the past have used similar tactics to shut Japan out of the game. Japan will be relying heavily on the experience of midfield pair Junichi Inamoto and Shunsuke Nakamura.

Every single member of Cameroon’s 23 member World Cup squad plies his trade outside Cameroon. The star of the squad is without a doubt striker Samuel Eto’o, who was part of Inter’s Champions League winning team last season. Their midfield looks strong, with the likes of Arsenal’s Alexandre Song, Celtic’s Landry N’Guemo, Lyon’s Jean Makoun and Real Betis’ Achille Emana in it. Their backline has Benoit Assou Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong in it, while Rigobert Song and Geremi have more than a hundred international caps to their name. There is a nice blend of youth and experience in the squad, and they could go far if they play to their potential.

Indomitable Lions coach Paul Le Guen has said that his team has what it requires to make it to the second round of the tournament. At the recently concluded African Cup of Nations, Cameroon reached the quarter finals before bowing out to champions Egypt.
