The Mexicans gave their own chances of progression a huge boost when they upset France 2-0 on Thursday. Substitute Javier Hernandez latched on to Rafael Marquez’s pass and slotted home on 64 minutes. The French defence waited in vain for the offside flag to show up, but it never came. Veteran Cuauhtémoc Blanco won it from the penalty spot after Eric Abidal’s clumsy challenge on Pablo Barrera eleven minutes from time.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre made only one change against France- brining in Hector Moreno for Paul Aguilar in defence. He will however be forced to shuffle his cards against Uruguay. Midfielder Efren Juarez is suspended after collecting two yellow cards, while Arsenal forward Carlos Vela is likely to miss this game after picking up a muscular injury in his right leg. Marquez and Blanco will equal Antonio Carbajal’s record of eleven World Cup appearances for Mexico if they play on Tuesday.

Uruguay all but assured themselves of qualification after beating South Africa 3-0 last Wednesday. A brace from Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan- one a stunning long range effort and the other from the spot, and a late goal from Alvaro Pereira left La Celeste sitting pretty atop Group A. They also have a positive goal difference of three that is bound to come in handy should they lose to Mexico.

Nicolas Lodeiro is available for selection after serving his one game ban against South Africa. A point will do well for both Uruguay and Mexico as they will both qualify at the expense of South Africa and France. The conspiracy theorists are pointing at a dour stalemate, but both coaches have dismissed the idea of a draw. The runner up of this group gets to play Argentina in the round of 16, and given the Albicelestes’ stunning form at this moment, both Uruguay and Mexico will be keen to avoid them.
