The Dutch were up against Slovakia, the conquerors of defending champions Italy, in the round of 16. However they really did not have to get out of second gear as they comfortably beat Vladimir Weiss’ men 2-1. Holland’s first goal of the game came from the boots of Bayern winger Arjen Robben, while the second was scored by Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder.
Slovakia managed to pull one back in second half injury time from the spot through Robert Vittek. However the Slovakians were guilty of missing several decent chances, with Vittek the culprit on more than one occasion.
Brazil notched up their eight successive victory over Chile when they beat La Roja 3-0 in the pre quarterfinals. Dunga’s men had to soak up some early pressure from the Chileans, but managed to go ahead when Juan nodded in Maicon’s corner after half an hour. Minutes later, Robinho and Kaka combined to set up Luis Fabiano for Brazil’s second. It was a blow that the Chileans could not recover from and Brazil managed to score once more, just before the hour mark, through Robinho, after some excellent work from Ramires.
While the Dutch defence has conceded just two goals in this tournament, they will face a serious threat from the Brazilians. Holland play with a flat four at the back and Nigel de Jong and Mark van Bommel ahead of them as holding midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Kaka and Robinho, especially the latter, have looked very good at this tournament, and Dutch coach Van Marwijk will instruct his defenders to pay special attention to them.
The two sides met in the knockout stages of the World Cup in 1994 and 1998, with Brazil emerging victorious on both occasions. Will Dunga’s men end Holland’s 100% record at the World Cup on Friday? See Netherlands vs Brazil live quarterfinal streaming and find out.
