Holland have been in stunning form in the lead up to the tournament. The Dutch first beat Mexico 2-1 and followed it up with a 4-1 thrashing of Ghana. They went one step better in their final game and hammered Hungary 6-1.  With the wealth of attacking talent at Bert van Marwijk’s disposal, it comes as no surprise that the Oranje are comfortably expected to top Group E.

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is a doubt for the clash against the Danes after picking up a hamstring injury in the friendly against Hungary. However Robben’s absence will not be felt should Wesley Sneijder be able to pull the strings from midfield. The playmaker had a great domestic season with Inter Milan and is one of the key players for the Dutch in the 4-2-3-1 formation that Van Marwijk prefers. Sneijder plays behind the solitary striker in that setup, who is likely to be Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie. The left wing spot is likely to be a tossup between Rafael van der Vaart and Ibrahim Affelay, although Eljero Elia and Robben can also be employed there if required.

The only chink in the Dutch armour seems to be their defence, in particular their full backs. On the left they have the ageing Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, while they have a young defender on the right in the form of Ajax Amsterdam’s Gregory van der Wiel.

The Danes surprised one and all by finishing first in a group that also consisted of Portugal and Scandinavian rivals Sweden. However they seem to have gone off track in the last few months or so, having lost three of their last four international friendlies. Denmark’s strength is their defence, which has the likes of Simon Kjaer, Daniel Agger and Per Koldrup in it. Defensive midfielder Christian Poulsen did an excellent job in qualifying and coach Morten Olsen will be hoping that he can also deliver the goods in South Africa.
