The Dutch did just enough to secure victory over a well organised Danish side in their tournament opener. Daniel Agger’s own goal gave the Netherlands the lead and they doubled it five minutes from time through Dirk Kuyt. The Liverpool forward was first to the ball after substitute Eljero Elia’s effort had hit the post, and he duly completed the easiest of tap ins.
Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder, playing as an attacking midfielder behind sole striker Robin Van Persie in Holland’s 4-2-3-1 formation, pulled the strings in the centre of the field and was given the Man of the Match award. Sneijder completed 61 out of his 65 passes, ending up with an astonishing 94% success rate. Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben missed the game against the Danes, and is also likely to sit out the Japan fixture.
Japan secured their first World Cup win outside Japan when they beat Cameroon 1-0 on Monday. The Samurai Blue were underdogs going into the game thanks to their poor recent form, but Keisuke Honda’s 39th minute goal was enough to give Takeshi Okada’s men three points against Paul le Guen’s Indomitable Lions.
There is plenty of room for improvement though. The Japanese had only three shots in the game against Cameroon, the lowest for any victorious team in a World Cup game in four and a half decades. The Netherlands have won all three previous World Cup games against Asian opposition and have scored ten times in those three encounters. Japan and the Netherlands have only met once in international competition. That was in September 2009, when the Dutch ran out 3-0 winners.
