The Dutch won each of their three games in Group E to finish with a 100% record. They beat Cameroon 2-1 in their last game, with goals from strikers Robin van Persie and Klaas Jan Huntelaar sealing victory for the Oranje over the Indomitable Lions. The game against Cameroon also saw the return of Arjen Robben from injury. The Bayern Munich winger, who had missed the first two games against Denmark and Japan, was a second half substitute for Rafael van der Vaart.

Robben created Holland’s second half winner for Huntelaar as the Dutch recovered to claim all three points after a sloppy start to the second half. The Oranje also conceded their first goal of the tournament against Cameroon- a penalty which was converted by Lions skipper Samuel Eto’o.

Slovakia scripted one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history when they dumped reigning champions Italy out of the tournament in the first round. Riding on Robert Vittek’s brace, the Slovaks lead 2-0 before Italy pulled one back through Antonio Di Natale. As the Azzurri pushed for an equaliser that would have seen them qualify, Slovakia scored their third. An erratic backpass had to be pushed out by Italian keeper Federico Marchetti and from the resulting throw in, substitute Kamil Kopunek scored with his first touch of the game to put Slovakia 3-1 ahead.

A delightful chip from Fabio Quaglirella brought Italy back into the game, but Slovakia clung on to their lead in the last few minutes to clinch a memorable victory. Vladimir Weiss’ side finished with four points, one more than New Zealand and two more than Italy. Slovakian midfielder Zdenko Strba is suspended for this clash.
