Both Spain and the Netherlands will be looking to pick up their first ever Football World Cup trophy when they meet in the final of the 2010 event in Soccer City on Sunday evening. Sign up today with Ole Ole Football and watch the World Cup 2010 final live on your computer.
The Dutch beat Uruguay 3-2 in the last four to reach their first World Cup final since 1978. Skipper Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s stunning first half effort, along with strikes from midfield playmakers Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, allowed Bert van Marwijk’s men to move into the final at the expense of La Celeste. If they win on Sunday, the Oranje will become only the second team after Brazil’s 1970 squad to win all qualifying games as well as World Cup fixtures en route to the Jules Rimet Trophy.
Midfielder Nigel de Jong and right back Gregory van der Wiel are likely to return to the starting XI after missing the Uruguay game through suspension. That means that Demy de Zeeuw and Khalid Boulahrouz will again have to make do with a spot on the bench.
Spain ended Germany’s run in the tournament as they beat Die Mannschaft 1-0. Barcelona’s Carles Puyol scored the winner in the second half as he headed in a Xavi corner past German keeper Manuel Neuer. Against Germany, Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque dropped Fernando Torres to the bench and started with Pedro upfront. Pedro’s selection allowed David Villa to play in a more central role, but El Guaje was unable to add to his tournament tally of five goals.
Spain will also have to find a way to contend with Arjen Robben. The Bayern winger was particularly influential against Brazil and Spanish left back Joan Capdevila could have his hands full on Sunday night. A lot will also depend on how the defensive midfield pairing of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets can handle Wesley Sneijder in the centre.
This is Spain’s first ever World Cup final, while the Dutch will be competing in their third final. If Spain win the trophy, they will emulate France by holding both the European and World trophies at the same time.
