The All Whites will be keen to prove that they are not there in South Africa merely to make up the numbers. Like New Zealand, Slovakia’s best known international figure is also a defender- Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel.  The 25 year old centre back, who has been struggling with an ankle problem he picked up against Costa Rica, returned to training with his team mates recently and is expected to be fit for the opener against the All Whites.

Slovakia beat Costa Rica 3-0 in that match which was overshadowed by the injury sustained by Skrtel. An own goal from Douglas Sequeira was followed by strikes from Robert Vittek and Stanislav Sestak. Slovakia qualified for the World Cup as winners of Group 3, ahead of more fancied teams like Czech Republic and Poland. Napoli’s Marek Hamsik has quietly built up a formidable reputation for himself in the Italian top flight and finds himself entrusted with the Slovakian captaincy at the tender age of 22.
