Paraguay had impressed in World Cup qualifying and looked equally good in the group stages of the World Cup. They started off by holding reigning champions Italy to a 1-1 draw and then produced an accomplished performance to beat Slovakia 2-0. Gerardo Martino’s side needed a point against New Zealand in their last game to be sure of qualification, and they managed it by playing out a goalless stalemate with the All Whites. Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo got a start against New Zealand at the expense of Lucas Barrios. Paraguay have a very talented forward line with Roque Santa Cruz, Barrios, Valdez and Cardozo available as options upfront.
Paraguay scored only three goals in the group stages- all from different players. Defender Antolín Alcaraz netted against Italy while Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros scored against Slovakia. Defensive midfielder Victor Caceres will have to sit out this fixture after collecting bookings against Italy and New Zealand.
In many people’s opinion, Japan were supposed to be taking an early flight back home out of the World Cup. However the Blue Samurai shocked one and all by picking up wins against Cameroon and Denmark and qualifying behind the Netherlands in Group E. The game against Denmark was particularly pleasing to watch if you were a Japanese fan. Keisuke Honda and Yasuhito Endo both struck fabulous free kicks, while substitute Shinji Okazaki scored Japan’s third after Jon Dahl Tomasson had pulled one back for Denmark.
The last two games between Paraguay and Japan have ended in draws. Paraguay however did get the better of Japan at the 2004 Olympics. The Paraguayans went all the way to the final on that occasion, where they lost to Argentina. This is the first time Japan have made it to the pre-quarters of the World Cup on foreign soil.
Will Gerardo Martino’s side prove to be too strong for the Blue Samurai? See Paraguay vs Japan live streaming at the World Cup and find out.
