Days after snatching a last gasp point against Slovakia, New Zealand again stunned the footballing world when they held reigning champions Italy to a 1-1 draw. Ricki Herbert’s men took the lead through Shane Smeltz early in the fixture. The Italians equalised through a Vincenzo Iaquinta penalty, although midfielder Daniele de Rossi seemed to go to ground too easily under Ipswich defender Tommy Smith’s challenge.

New Zealand defended well and goalkeeper Mark Paston was on top of his game. Paston seemed determined not to let the Azzurri score again and pulled off some excellent saves to keep the scoreline at 1-1. Skipper Ryan Nelsen marshalled his men well and Italy, despite dominating possession, could simply not find a winner. The All Whites could have even snatched a surprise victory towards the end had young West Brom forward Chris Wood not dragged his shot wide.

Paraguay dominated all departments of the game against Slovakia and were worthy winners against Vladimir Weiss’ side. Goals in either half from midfielders Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros sent Gerardo Martino’s side to the top of Group F. Against Slovakia, Martino played three forwards in the form of Santa Cruz, Haedo Valdez and Barrios. They are now within touching distance of a spot in the last sixteen.

Paraguay have four points from two fixtures, while New Zealand have two from as many games. A win for Paraguay would see them qualify as Group F winners, while victory for the Kiwis will see Paraguay having to depend on the result of the other fixture between Slovakia and world champions Italy. A draw in Polokwane will also do perfectly well for Paraguay.
