Group F winners Paraguay continued their dream run at the World Cup when they beat Japan in the Round of 16. The game produced few chances of note and failed to produce a goal at the end of extra time, forcing it into penalties. Paraguay went first in the shootout and got their first three penalties on target. Japan converted their first two, but Jubilo defender Yuichi Komano struck the bar with his effort. Nelson Haedo Valdez and Keisuke Honda then converted their respective penalties, leaving Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo with the opportunity to send Paraguay into the last eight for the first time.

Cardozo, an extra time substitute for Roque Santa Cruz, was as cool as a cucumber as he beat Japanese keeper Eiji Kawashima from twelve yards out, allowing Paraguay to triumph 5-3 in the shootout. Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino was in tears after seeing his team achieve history at the Lotus Versfeld Stadium.

Spain beat Iberian neighbours Portugal in a keenly contested quarterfinal. Barcelona forward David Villa scored the only goal of the game shortly after the hour mark. Villa’s first time effort was blocked by Portuguese keeper Eduardo, but El Guaje was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

Spain made a bright start to the game, but Portugal forced their way back into it as the first half progressed. Spanish skipper Iker Casillas looked a bit nervous in goal having to contend both with the unpredictability of the Jabulani ball and Cristiano Ronaldo’s long range efforts. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres looked a pale shadow of himself and was taken off in the second half for Fernando Llorente. It remains to be seen whether Del Bosque persists with Torres against Paraguay or opts for an extra man in midfield against their opponents.
