After hammering seven past North Korea, Portugal can book their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup by avoiding defeat against five time champions Brazil when the two sides meet in Durban on Friday. Carlos Queiroz’s side launched a second half blitzkrieg against the North Koreans in Cape Town which left their Asian opponents dazed. The two sides were only separated by Raul Meireles’ 29th minute goal at half time, but Portugal sped into top gear after Simao scored in the 53rd minute. Goals from Hugo Almeida and Tiago saw Portugal lead 4-0 at the hour mark and late strikes from Liedson, skipper Cristiano Ronaldo and Tiago again saw the Seleccao thrash their opponents 7-0. It was Ronaldo’s first international goal in nearly two years and you can bet that the Real Madrid forward would have been mighty pleased after breaking his goal drought.
The result has all but guaranteed Portugal’s place in the next stage of the competition. Even if Portugal were to lose to Brazil, Ivory Coast would have to match Portugal’s victory against North Korea in order to surpass Carlos Queiroz’s side on goal difference. Should Portugal beat the Brazilians, they will top the group ahead of Dunga’s side.
Brazil are already guaranteed a place in the next round thanks to wins over North Korea and Ivory Coast in their first two fixtures. The Samba Boys simply need to avoid defeat against the Portuguese to confirm their position as winners of the Group of Death. They will have to do it without playmaker Kaka though. The Real Madrid star was sent off for a seemingly innocuous foul on midfielder Kader Keita in the game against Ivory Coast.
Kaka had a hand in two of Brazil’s third goals. He set up Luis Fabiano for Brazil’s opener and also assisted Elano for Brazil’s third goal. Fabiano showed great skill for Brazil’s second goal, although there was a hint of handball involved in it. However few people will argue that Brazil did not deserve all three points against the Elephants.
