Portugal drew 0-0 with Ivory Coast in their Group of Death opener. It was billed as a battle between Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba, but the two players in question created very few chances and were unable to break the deadlock. However Ronaldo did have a long range effort that rattled the post in the first half.
Portugal chose to put safety first and many balls that passed through midfield often found their way back to defence instead of going forward. The introduction of Simao and Tiago did change things a bit, but not enough to give Carlos Queiroz’s side all three points. Midfielder Deco is expected to retain his spot in midfield despite publicly criticising his manager’s selection policies. Simao could come in ahead of Danny on the left wing for Portugal. Queiroz is likely to persist with his backline of Ferreira, Alves, Carvalho and Coentrao.
North Korea showed great spirit and resilience against Brazil and it took a screamer from wingback Maicon in the second half to give the Brazilians an opening. The Samba Boys did score another goal, but Korea themselves pulled one back and showed that they were not present merely to make up the numbers in Group G.
Portugal will be well aware that goal difference could come into play in the Group of Death and their forwards will be encouraged to test North Korean stopper Ri Myong-Guk as much as possible. The only previous meeting between Portugal and North Korea took place at the 1966 World Cup. Portugal prevailed 5-3 in the quarterfinals thanks to Eusebio’s four goal haul despite trailing 3-0 at one stage in the game. Portugal’s defence has been miserly in recent internationals, but will have to be wary of Jong Tae-Se, nicknamed the North Korean Rooney.
