This is Serbia’s first World Cup as an independent nation. They competed at the 2006 World Cup as Serbia and Montenegro, but lost all three games in the Group of Death and bowed out of the competition in the first round. This time around, they are again in an unpredictable group as all four teams topped their respective groups in qualifying.
Serbia were impressive in qualification, winning their group ahead of 2006 runners up France. The strength of their side lies in their miserly defence, which let in only eight goals during qualifying. Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic and Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic form one of the best central defensive pairings at the tournament, and opposition forwards will find it hard to breach them easily.
Serbia’s results in their last three friendlies have not exactly been encouraging. They lost to New Zealand, drew against Poland and beat Cameroon in a seven goal thriller. But with players like Dejan Stankovic, Milos Krasic and Milan Jovanovic in their ranks, few teams will take the side lightly.
Ghana reached the finals of the 2010 African Cup of Nations before losing to Egypt. They will be without the influential Michael Essien, but coach Milovan Rajevac will hope that other players like Stephen Appiah can rise to the occasion and fill the gaping hole left by Essien’s absence. Rajevac is also likely to keep faith with several members from the U-20 World Cup winning squad after their impressive performances at the African Cup of Nations. The Black Stars beat a local Durban outfit 4-0 in their last fixture thanks to goals from Appiah, Dominic Adiyiah, Matthew Amoah and Prince Tagoe. Midfielders Kwadwo Asamoah and Sulley Ali Muntari are slight injury doubts after picking up knocks in training.
