The Slovakians drew 1-1 with New Zealand in their group opener. They seemed on course for their first World Cup win as an independent nation following Robert Vittek’s 50^th minute header, but were denied all three points by Winston Reid’s injury time effort for New Zealand. Slovakia paid the price for sitting back as All Whites striker Shane Smeltz’s cross from the left was nodded in by Reid.

It was a cruel goal to concede for the Slovakians and indeed, many of their players felt that they had lost the match instead of drawing it. Had Slovakia won the fixture, they would have been sitting at the top of Group F going into the second round of fixtures as the other game between Italy and Paraguay also ended in a draw.

Paraguay put up a spirited display as they held world champions Italy to a 1-1 draw in their tournament opener. Wigan bound Antolin Alcaraz gave Paraguay a shock lead in the 39^th minute when he headed in Aureliano Torres’ free kick. However Paraguayan keeper Justo Villar joined the growing list of goalkeeping villains at this World Cup when his horrendous piece of misjudgement gifted Italy an equaliser. Villar failed to take control of Simone Pepe’s corner kick and allowed Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi to score for the Azzurri.

The mistake allowed Italy to avoid the fate that befell Argentina at the 1990 World Cup and France at the 2002 World Cup. Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino was very happy with the result obtained his side given that Italy are most people’s favourites to top the group. Both Oscar Cardozo and Roque Santa Cruz made only substitute appearances against the Italians, but may have more time on the pitch this weekend against the Slovakians.
