England have flattered to deceive in their first two World Cup fixtures, and all of a sudden, Group C is not looking like the walk in the park it was supposed to be for the Three Lions. However their fate is still very much in their own hands- an outright victory over Slovenia will see them qualify for the round of 16, regardless of what happens in the other group match between the United States and Algeria.
England were poor against Algeria and thousands of disappointed fans, who had expected a better performance from their stars, booed the team at the final whistle. Coach Fabio Capello did not have a happy birthday at all as England struggled to break Algeria down. The players, with the exception of Steven Gerrard, failed to lift their game against the Desert Foxes and England now have all to do in the final fixture against the Slovenians. Against Algeria, Capello restored David James to the starting XI at the expense of Robert Green and the Pompey stopper is likely to retain his place against Slovenia after a good game between the sticks against the North African outfit.
Slovenia were nine minutes away from becoming the first nation to qualify for the knockout stages, but they conceded a late equaliser against the United States and will now have to avoid defeat against England to progress to the next round. A loss to the Three Lions will also do provided the USA-Algeria game ends in a draw. An Algerian win would also be fine, but goal difference will come into play in such a situation as Algeria and Slovenia would then be on the same number of points.
Against the United States, Slovenia took the lead through a stunning strike from midfielder Valter Birsa that left US keeper Tim Howard rooted to his spot. They doubled it against the run of play through striker Zlatan Ljubijankic, but were unable to preserve their advantage as the US fought back in the second half to pick up a point.
