Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0 in a dour game in Polokwane on Sunday. Skipper Robert Koren scored the only goal of the fixture in the 79^th minute. The former West Brom midfielder’s shot was horribly misjudged by Algerian keeper Faouzi Chaouchi, who produced a Greenesque howler to give Slovenia three priceless points.

Slovenia were also aided by the dismissal of Algerian substitute Abdelkader Ghezzal in the 73^rd minute of the game. Striker Ghezzal lasted less than fifteen minutes on the pitch after coming on as a replacement for Rafik Djebbour. Slovenian keeper Samir Handanovic nearly gifted Algeria a goal when his misplaced pass found Karim Ziani instead of Marko Suler, but fortunately for Slovenia, Handanovic recovered to deny the Marseille midfielder.

The United States were not able to replicate their 1950 Miracle on Grass, but certainly did their chances of qualification no harm with a 1-1 draw against the English. England captain Steven Gerrard showed some quick thinking when he latched on to team mate Emile Heskey’s pass in the 4^th minute and slid the ball past US keeper Tim Howard. The United States got their equaliser when Robert Green inexplicably spilt Clint Dempsey’s tame effort and let it go past the line.

Encouraging for the United States was the partnership of Oguchi Onyewu and Jay Demerit in central defence. Onyewu in particular had an excellent game and did not look in the slightest like a player who had featured only once for his club last season. Against England, Bob Bradley started with Jozy Altidore and the pacy Robbie Findley upfront. Findley could make way for Buddle or Hercules Gomez against Slovenia. Goalkeeper Tim Howard suffered a knock against the English but is expected to recover in time for this game.
