South Africa struggled in the first half of their game against Mexico, but they did put up an improved performance in the second half. Kaizer Chiefs winger Siphiwe Tshabalala gave them the lead with a venomous shot that gave opposition keeper Oscar Perez no chance as it flew into the top corner of his net.

However poor defending from Bafana Bafana allowed Barcelona’s Rafael Marquez to get on to the end of substitute Andres Guardado’s cross and beat South Africa keeper Khune at his near post for Mexico’s equaliser. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira would not have been too happy with the performance of his backline- Mexico could easily have been three or four goals in front in the first half had Dos Santos and Vela been more potent with their final touches. Mokoena, Khumalo and Lucas Thwala did not have great games and will have to pull up their socks against the Uruguayans.

Uruguay drew 0-0 with France, a result they would be quite pleased with given that they ended the game with ten men. France bossed possession but were unable to make it count. Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan played well, but otherwise Uruguay were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure. Right back Victorino was harried by Franck Ribery and will be hoping for an easier outing against South Africa.

Uruguay will be more adventurous against South Africa on Wednesday and coach Tabarez has already remarked that he expects La Celeste to take all three points on Wednesday. Nicolas Lodeiro is suspended for this clash following his dismissal against France. Lodeiro was a second half substitute against the French and was given his marching orders less than twenty minutes after coming on.
