Spain recovered from a shock opening loss to Switzerland to qualify as winners of Group H. La Furia Roja saw off Honduras 2-0 and beat Chile 2-1 in their final game to finish atop Group H on goal difference from the Chileans. David Villa was Spain’s top scorer during the group stages. Villa netted a brace against Honduras and would have had a hat trick against the Central Americans had he not missed a penalty. The Barcelona striker also scored against Chile, with Andres Iniesta netting Spain’s other goal against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Spain have no suspension problems as none of their players got booked during the group stages. After playing with a solitary striker against Switzerland, coach Vicente del Bosque has reverted to playing both Torres and David Villa upfront. With the three man midfield of Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso and Xavi playing in all games, it looks like David Silva and Jesus Navas will both have to be content with watching from the bench.

Portugal drew blanks against both Ivory Coast and Brazil, but qualified for the knockout phase thanks to their 7-0 thrashing of North Korea. Carlos Queiroz’s men finished with five points from three Group G fixtures, two behind winners Brazil.

The two sides last met in the group stages of Euro 2004. Portugal prevailed 1-0 on that occasion thanks to Nuno Gomes’ 57th minute winner. Spain will have four survivors from that game on the pitch in Cape Town on Monday- goalkeeper Iker Casillas, defender Carles Puyol, midfielder Xabi Alonso and striker Fernando Torres. Portugal will have three- skipper Cristiano Ronaldo, centre half Ricardo Carvalho and veteran midfielder Deco. The winner of this game will face the winner of the Paraguay vs Japan game in the last eight.
